Frequently Asked Questions

The GEF Student Grants Program was created to offer funding to support GUSD students who have an inventive project idea that will benefit their classmates or school. It could be for a new program or for additional support to supplement an already existing program.
Who is eligible to take part in the GEF Student Grants Program?
Any GUSD student is eligible to apply for a GEF Student Grant.
How much funding can I apply for?
The maximum amount is $1,000.00.
Can a mentor be anybody?
No. A mentor must be a teacher, counselor, coach, or project advisor from your school.
What kinds of projects qualify for a GEF Student Grant?
Your grant request must fall within one of GEF’s three focus areas: Health & Wellness, Visual & Performing Arts, or Science & Technology.
When are the grant applications due?
Applications are due by January 14, 2025.
Once I’ve applied for a student grant, what happens next?
The GEF Student Grants Committee will review all of the applications and choose semi-finalists. Everyone will be notified by email whether or not they have been chosen for the next step. Semi-finalists will then be asked to give a short Shark Tank style presentation about their program for the GEF Committee.
What do you mean by a Shark Tank style presentation?
A Shark Tank style presentation, similar to the TV show, is a highly interactive and visual sales pitch, which helps the committee members better understand your project! It should be from 3-5 minute and should include:
o A clear vision of your project
o How it benefits your classmates and/or school
o Visuals, music, and enthusiasm are encouraged! Have fun!
Once I have made my Shark Tank style presentation to the GEF Committee, when will I learn if I am awarded a GEF Student Grant?
All semi-finalists will be contacted by email and those chosen will be listed on our website.
I have been selected! Now what?
You will be invited to attend a Board of Education meeting. We will give you your checks and a mandatory Evaluation Form at that time.
What is a mandatory Evaluation Form?
The evaluation form gets turned into GEF at the end of the school year. It should explain what your award was used for, what challenges might have occurred and how your project impacted you, your classmates and your school. By applying for this grant you are agreeing that you will complete this evaluation, and send it back to GEF by May 28, 2025. We would also appreciate any supplemental items at this time, such as pictures or videos.
If selected when would I be expected to use my money?
All funds must be spent and evaluation form sent in by Wednesday, May 28, 2025, unless other arrangements have been made. Any unspent funds must be returned to GEF.
What if I am awarded a GEF Student Grant then come up with a better idea – can I change my project?
No.
What if I am awarded a grant, then I leave Glendale Unified for another school district – can I use the funds in another district?
No, all funds must be spent within the Glendale Unified School District. Any unused money must be sent back to GEF.
